PCB footprint inquiry for AT25SF128A-MHB-T

Question

Hi, 
 I am wondering if the Exposed Thermal PAD on the AT25SF128A-MHB-T should be connected to GND. If not, I would also like to know what problems will occur if the Exposed Thermal PAD is not connected to GND. 
 I refer to the recommended landing pattern of AN-116.
