Think about the Internet of Things (IoT) for a second. What are two essential components that realize the IoT vision? If you answered MCUs and sensors, you win the smart developer of the day award!
And what’s a critical MCU requirement for low-power and typically battery-operated sensing applications? Extending battery life, naturally!
Renesas has developed MCU products within the Synergy Platform that does exactly that -- the S1 series of MCUs. These small form factor, ultra-low power, 130 nm MCUs operate down to just 1.6 V and use the highly power-efficient ARM® Cortex®-M0+ processor core.
With a very capable on-chip analog interface, the S1 series MCUs are well suited for data capture and environmental sensing applications using combinations of a 14-bit ADC, a 12-bit DAC, and low power comparators. Sensing applications for smoke, carbon monoxide, pressure, humidity, and motion are covered. Other applications include lighting control and portable handheld devices such as point of sale terminals, scanners, activity monitors and fitness trackers.
Hardware acceleration is provided through peripherals to optimize CPU bandwidth and lower power consumption, which leads to greater flexibility to manage events and data transfers. The S1 series MCUs also include security functions, such as a true random number generator and AES cryptography, as well as safety self-test functions, capacitive touch interface, and a real-time clock.
Check out the following block diagram to better understand the capability of Synergy MCUs from the S124 MCU group:
As is the case with every Synergy MCU, the scalability and compatibility of the Synergy MCU portfolio lets me increase or decrease the feature set across a product line. I can re-use significant portions of my development code, thus reducing cost, resource waste and, ultimately, time-to-market.
That’s it for today. Next time we’ll cover the last (but certainly not least) of the four Synergy MCU series, the S5 series.
Live long and profit!
